THE VALUE OF RESPITE CARE

A break for you, continuity for them

Caring for an aging parent or spouse is an act of love, but it is also relentless. Family caregivers often give so much of themselves that their own health, work, and relationships begin to suffer, and burnout sets in quietly. Respite care exists to prevent that. It provides trusted, temporary relief so you can step away without worry, knowing your loved one is in capable, compassionate hands at home.

For families across Scranton, Carbondale, and the surrounding Northeast Pennsylvania communities, respite care is what makes caring at home sustainable. Whether you need a standing weekly break, coverage while you travel, or emergency relief, our caregivers follow your routine closely, so your loved one stays comfortable and you can return refreshed.

Who benefits from respite care?

Respite care is ideal for family caregivers who feel stretched thin, those balancing caregiving with work or young children, and anyone caring for a loved one with dementia or complex needs. It is equally valuable when a caregiver falls ill, has appointments of their own, or simply needs a well-earned rest.

  • Family caregivers feeling stretched thin or burned out
  • Those balancing caregiving with work or raising children
  • Caregivers who need to travel or attend to their own health
  • Families caring for a loved one with dementia or complex needs

Common Questions

Answers for families considering senior care services

Yes. Caring at Home provides home care services seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. Our management team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your loved one’s needs do not follow a business schedule, and neither do we.

Caring at Home has the ability to place a caregiver the same day you call in many cases. We understand that care needs can arise suddenly, especially following a hospital stay or a change in a loved one’s condition. Reach out to our Utica office, and we will move as quickly as your family needs us to.

There is rarely one clear moment. More often, families notice a gradual accumulation of small signs: a parent forgetting meals, letting the house go, withdrawing from activities they used to love, or having trouble with basic tasks like bathing or getting dressed. If you have found yourself worrying more during visits, or spending your own time managing things they used to handle independently, it may be time to have a conversation. We are here to help you think it through, not push you into a decision.

Home health care refers to medically supervised services, such as skilled nursing, wound care, or physical therapy, ordered by a physician and typically covered by Medicare. Home care, which is what Caring at Home provides, focuses on non-medical support: help with bathing, dressing, meals, companionship, light housekeeping, and daily living activities. Both types of care can be provided at home, and many families receive both at the same time following a hospitalization or health event.

Medicare may cover some skilled nursing or physical therapy services provided at home under very specific conditions — you must be homebound and need part-time or intermittent skilled care — but it does not cover non-medical companion care, personal care assistance, or most of the services Caring at Home provides. Long-term care insurance policies often do cover these services. Our team is happy to help you think through your options during your free assessment.

The cost of home care in Utica, PA varies based on the type of care needed and the number of hours per week. Caring at Home offers flexible scheduling so families can start with the hours that make sense for their budget and adjust over time. During your free in-home assessment, our care coordinator will walk you through all of the options.
