Understanding Personal Care

A closer look at in-home personal care

As we age, the everyday tasks we once took for granted — stepping into the shower, buttoning a shirt, moving safely from bed to chair — can become sources of risk and frustration. In-home personal care exists to restore that ease. Rather than uprooting your loved one to an assisted living facility, our caregivers bring hands-on support directly to the place they feel most themselves: home.

For families across Scranton, Carbondale, and the surrounding Northeast Pennsylvania communities, personal care is often the first step in a longer care journey. It bridges the gap between full independence and more comprehensive support, giving adult children peace of mind that a parent is safe, clean, nourished, and treated with dignity every single day.

Who benefits from personal care?

Personal care is ideal for seniors recovering from surgery or a hospital stay, those managing chronic conditions such as arthritis or Parkinson’s, and anyone whose mobility or stamina has declined. It’s equally valuable for family caregivers who need dependable, professional help to prevent burnout while keeping a loved one at home.

  • Seniors recovering from surgery or a hospital stay
  • Those managing chronic conditions or reduced mobility
  • Loved ones at risk of falls who need safe assistance
  • Family caregivers seeking dependable, professional relief

How our personal care works

It begins with a free in-home assessment, where we listen to your family’s needs and observe the home environment. From there we build a personalized care plan and carefully match a caregiver for both skill and temperament. A dedicated coordinator stays in regular contact, adjusting the plan as needs evolve — so care always fits, and you’re never left guessing.

Common Questions

Answers for families considering senior care services

Yes. Caring at Home provides home care services seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. Our management team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your loved one’s needs do not follow a business schedule, and neither do we.

Caring at Home has the ability to place a caregiver the same day you call in many cases. We understand that care needs can arise suddenly, especially following a hospital stay or a change in a loved one’s condition. Reach out to our Utica office, and we will move as quickly as your family needs us to.

There is rarely one clear moment. More often, families notice a gradual accumulation of small signs: a parent forgetting meals, letting the house go, withdrawing from activities they used to love, or having trouble with basic tasks like bathing or getting dressed. If you have found yourself worrying more during visits, or spending your own time managing things they used to handle independently, it may be time to have a conversation. We are here to help you think it through, not push you into a decision.

Home health care refers to medically supervised services, such as skilled nursing, wound care, or physical therapy, ordered by a physician and typically covered by Medicare. Home care, which is what Caring at Home provides, focuses on non-medical support: help with bathing, dressing, meals, companionship, light housekeeping, and daily living activities. Both types of care can be provided at home, and many families receive both at the same time following a hospitalization or health event.

Medicare may cover some skilled nursing or physical therapy services provided at home under very specific conditions — you must be homebound and need part-time or intermittent skilled care — but it does not cover non-medical companion care, personal care assistance, or most of the services Caring at Home provides. Long-term care insurance policies often do cover these services. Our team is happy to help you think through your options during your free assessment.

The cost of home care in Utica, PA varies based on the type of care needed and the number of hours per week. Caring at Home offers flexible scheduling so families can start with the hours that make sense for their budget and adjust over time. During your free in-home assessment, our care coordinator will walk you through all of the options.
