UnDERSTANDING COMPANIONSHIP SERVICES

A closer look at in-home companion care

Isolation is one of the quiet risks of aging. When friends move away, driving becomes difficult, or a spouse passes, the days can grow long and lonely — and loneliness takes a real toll on health and spirit. In-home companion care exists to bring warmth back into the everyday: a friendly face, a good conversation, a shared cup of coffee, and a reason to stay engaged with the world.

For families across Scranton, Carbondale, and the surrounding Northeast Pennsylvania communities, companion care is often the gentle first step in a care journey. It keeps a parent socially connected and mentally stimulated while giving adult children peace of mind that someone caring is checking in, brightening the day, and watching for changes.

Who benefits from companion care?

Companion care is ideal for seniors who live alone, those who have recently lost a spouse, and anyone feeling the effects of isolation. It suits loved ones who are still largely independent but would benefit from regular social contact, help with errands, and a watchful, friendly presence throughout the week.

  • Seniors who live alone or feel isolated
  • Loved ones who have recently lost a spouse or friend
  • Those who no longer drive and need help with errands
  • Independent seniors who simply enjoy regular company

How our companion care works

It begins with a free in-home visit, where we get to know your loved one’s interests, routines, and personality. From there we thoughtfully match a companion chosen for genuine rapport, not just availability. A dedicated coordinator stays in regular contact, adjusting visits as life changes — so the relationship stays a good fit over time.

Common Questions

Answers for families considering senior care services

Yes. Caring at Home provides home care services seven days a week, including evenings and weekends. Our management team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your loved one’s needs do not follow a business schedule, and neither do we.

Caring at Home has the ability to place a caregiver the same day you call in many cases. We understand that care needs can arise suddenly, especially following a hospital stay or a change in a loved one’s condition. Reach out to our Utica office, and we will move as quickly as your family needs us to.

There is rarely one clear moment. More often, families notice a gradual accumulation of small signs: a parent forgetting meals, letting the house go, withdrawing from activities they used to love, or having trouble with basic tasks like bathing or getting dressed. If you have found yourself worrying more during visits, or spending your own time managing things they used to handle independently, it may be time to have a conversation. We are here to help you think it through, not push you into a decision.

Home health care refers to medically supervised services, such as skilled nursing, wound care, or physical therapy, ordered by a physician and typically covered by Medicare. Home care, which is what Caring at Home provides, focuses on non-medical support: help with bathing, dressing, meals, companionship, light housekeeping, and daily living activities. Both types of care can be provided at home, and many families receive both at the same time following a hospitalization or health event.

Medicare may cover some skilled nursing or physical therapy services provided at home under very specific conditions — you must be homebound and need part-time or intermittent skilled care — but it does not cover non-medical companion care, personal care assistance, or most of the services Caring at Home provides. Long-term care insurance policies often do cover these services. Our team is happy to help you think through your options during your free assessment.

The cost of home care in Utica, PA varies based on the type of care needed and the number of hours per week. Caring at Home offers flexible scheduling so families can start with the hours that make sense for their budget and adjust over time. During your free in-home assessment, our care coordinator will walk you through all of the options.
